CWOIL Conference 2023: An Inaugural Event to Remember

The Canadian Women in Ocean Industry Leadership Conference 2023, occurred last week, May 9th - 11th, in St. John's Newfoundland. The inaugural event was a phenomenal success in promoting diversity and inclusion in the ocean sector.

Close to 200 ocean professionals were in attendance, including individuals of varying ages, races, academic levels, government representatives, indigenous persons, 2ASLGBTQ+ community, varying cultural backgrounds, and so much more. CWOIL was able to create an inclusive environment where all voices were heard and valued, through a collaboration with Gale Force Wins and OceansAdvance own Kelly Snarby, on the 'Diversity in the Blue Economy' Podcast.

The sessions that took place, contained conversations on the importance of a diverse ocean sector recognizing the trials and tribulations of those who are underrepresented in the ocean industry.

CWOIL brought forward aspects of Newfoundland heritage and indigenous culture by showcasing live Irish Newfoundland music, traditional drumming, Inuit music, throat singing, and a loving Newfoundland dog. The conference provided an opportunity for attendees to deepen their understanding of the blue economy and created a space for meaningful connections to form with each other.

By celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity, the conference emphasized the importance of a vibrant ocean industry that embraces individuals from all walks of life. To those that attended we are eternally grateful for your support. This important event has started a wave of networks that we believe will last a lifetime.

We look forward to gathering again next year and reconnecting, celebrating our success and showcasing our achievements from the National Action Plan.

Stay tuned for CWOIL 2024 dates, coming soon!
